Get Your Site On Google!
These days, am searching for ways of making a website get a rank in the search engines results! I believe that everyone who has a personal homepage would want to see his/her site in google’s or yahoo’s search results.
So let’s take thinks from the beginning... Periodically, search engines are crawling the web and they add to their index every new link they find. Also they remove dead links or links that are no longer exists for some reason. By this procedure a search engine’s bot can find your site for sure, but what happens if a site is built with flash?? Or, it has links that the bots couldn’t find because it was built in non-html languages.
The answer to this one is “Sitemap”. A sitemap is something like an index of your site that holds all of your site’s web pages and helps the bots find the pages on the site. So a sitemap provides a general top-down view of the overall site contents.
A sitemap can be in XML, TXT or HTML format.
Each format has a specific use.
•HTML format:
A sitemap in HTML format helps your “human” visitors find quickly the links of the website and navigate easily on your site.
•TXT format:
A sitemap in TXT format is just to keep in a plain text all the links of your site...Think of it as a back up!
•XML format:
A sitemap in XML format is a file that can be submitted to search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, Bing etc., to help them crawl your web site better. And this is what you want!
So, how i obtain a sitemap for my site???
I will tell you right away!
First of all you go to xml-sitemaps.com. And you follow the 4 very easy steps that you will see.
After you create the sitemap, download the one in XML format and upload it in the server where your site is located and inside the folder that xmlsitemap tells you. To make sure that you did it all as said, navigate to your sitemap’s url. If your browser displays the sitemap then you are ok, if not repeat the upload and check the folder you are uploading to.
To continue the procedure you must have a google account. So, go to google and create one. If you have, skip this step.
Then go to the google webmaster tools web page and log in using your account. In the “Home” page add your site and after that click it to get to the “Dashboard” page. This page is like a control panel for your site. In the left panel you can see some options, click the “site configuration” and select sitemaps.
Click on Submit a sitemap button and give your sitemap’s url. If you have done everything correctly then a green tick should appear under the “status” column. If not delete it and do the steps again.
I hope this post will be helpful to everyone that has a website! Feel free to ask for more info!
